Frequently Asked Questions

What is therapy?

Therapy, also known as counseling or psychotherapy, is a process where individuals work with a trained therapist to explore and address emotional, psychological, or behavioral issues. It provides a safe and confidential space for self-reflection and personal growth.

Why do people go to therapy?

People seek therapy for various reasons, including dealing with mental health issues (such as depression or anxiety), managing stress, coping with major life changes, improving relationships, and enhancing personal development and self-awareness.

What can I expect in a therapy session?

Therapy sessions typically involve open and honest conversation between you and your therapist. The therapist may ask questions, provide insights, and offer guidance. The number and frequency of sessions depend on your specific needs and the therapeutic approach used.

How long does therapy take?

The duration of therapy varies widely depending on individual needs and goals. Some people may see progress in a few sessions, while others may benefit from longer-term therapy. We will discuss your goals and expectations to create a personalized plan.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes, therapy is generally confidential. Therapists are bound by ethical and legal guidelines to keep your information private. However, there are some exceptions, such as situations involving harm to yourself or others, child abuse, or when ordered by a court.

How much does therapy cost?

$150 per 50-minute, individual session.

$180 per 50-minute, couple or family session.

I also offer sliding scale fees based on financial need. If my fees are outside of what is affordable to you, Open Path Collective is a low-cost alternative option.

Can I use insurance to see you?

I do accept Aetna for individual clients, but I encourage people to self-pay if possible. Insurance companies can require me to share your mental health information, and this can be used against you to limit coverage in the future. I can also be considered an out-of-network provider, so your insurance benefits may be used depending on your coverage, by submitting a Superbill which I can provide to you if you so wish.

What if I don't feel comfortable with you?

It's essential to feel a sense of trust and comfort. If you don't feel a good connection, it's okay to discuss your concerns. If the issues persist, we may consider finding another therapist for you who better meets your needs.

Can I benefit from therapy even if I don't have a mental health diagnosis?

Absolutely. Therapy is not only for those with diagnosed mental health conditions. Many people seek therapy for personal growth, relationship improvement, stress management, and navigating life transitions.

Is therapy only for individuals, or can couples and families participate?

Therapy is available for individuals, couples, and families. Different therapeutic approaches are used to address various dynamics and relationships, allowing for tailored interventions based on the specific needs of each client or group.

Remember that these answers are general and may vary depending on the specific circumstances and the type of therapy you are considering. It's always a good idea to discuss any concerns or questions. Call or email for a free 15-minute consultation.
